Setting a wellness routine: Five ways to make sure you stay healthy every day

Set goals: Be clear about what you want to achieve, and why. Work with your doctor on this. Ask your nutritionist, if you have one. If you don’t, consider consulting someone about your diet, even for a couple of sessions, just to get clear about what you are doing right, and what you’re getting wrong. Do not be overambitious in this exercise. Start with a three-month goal, and go from there. Track your progress every day using a good app – there are so many to choose from now. Be honest with yourself, and be kind.

Make time & allocate resources for those goals: If you’ve committed to working out three days a week, for an hour each day, stick to it. That might mean you wake up an hour earlier, or that you hit the gym on the weekend. Or that you invest in having someone come home to train you. Whatever it is that you need to do to get it done, do it. Commit. Stay committed.

Build a support system: Tell your family and friends what you’re doing. Tell your boss if you need to leave work early one day a week, or come in an hour late, and also let them know how you will compensate for it. Don’t expect people to do you favours – just ask them to cooperate within reasonable limits.

Be real & forgive yourself: If you know that you’re going into a stressful week at work, or that you have family visiting who are staying with you, figure out how you are going to work around that. If you cannot, just accept it. If you trust yourself to work with yourself, that’s half the job done. No one is Superman or Wonder Woman, so you will have days or maybe even weeks when sticking to your routine is tough. Remember that you can always get back on track but for that time when you’re not able to be as disciplined as you like, do what you can.

Above all else, be happy: Every day, find time to do one thing you love. It could be as simple as listening to your favourite music on your way to work. Or playing with your kids. Or taking your dog for a walk. Or eating dinner with the family. Whatever it is that makes you smile, do it every day.
